The game is extremely well known and popular in almost every country and nation in the world. In this game, players use their racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. It is officially the fastest racquet sport.
In this game, a player can throw a shuttlecock at a very high speed towards his opponent, which requires strength and to counter it back, the player has to be fast and agile. But, it is not just about speed and agility; you have to run across the whole court during the game, which requires stamina and energy. It is how this game improves the energy level of a person.
It is not a challenging game to master. Absolute beginners with little or no skill can also enjoy their very first game. It’s not so difficult to progress quickly in this game. This is what makes it a beautiful game. This game can attract a person in a short time; that is why it is a top-rated game. It needs minimal equipment to start playing Badminton. It also requires racquets, shuttlecocks, and a net. It is an excellent game for conditioning the body.
You can burn a massive amount of calories by playing this sport. Your stamina, flexibility, and coordination will increase. You can meet new people as your opponents by playing this game regularly, which makes it a social game. This game is most popular in Asia. It’s prevalent in Europe too. It can be played anywhere, but formal games are performed on a rectangular indoor court.
Origin of the game
The name of the game Badminton, comes from a country estate of the dukes of Beaufort in Gloucestershire, England. The reason for naming the game after the country state was a belief that this is where it was first played. In this place, Badminton was first performed in 1873. But Badminton’s exact origin remains unclear.
You can find the roots of the sport in ancient Greece, China, and India. It is very similar to the old children’s battledore and shuttlecock game because the actions are pretty much the same. This game was top-rated among British officers in the 1870s.
The British officers returned home and started a badminton tournament there. They played with 1 to 4 players. But soon, they realized two or four players make the best combination. The first rules for the game was set in Pune and it was last until 1887. The Badminton Association of England (BAE) published new rules in 1893 and officially launched the game at a house called Dunbar. In 1899, the first unofficial all-England men Badminton championship was held. In the next year, the first badminton tournament for women was arranged.
The equipment for the game
As I stated earlier, It needs minimal equipment to start playing Badminton. Racquets, shuttlecocks, nets, shoes are the leading equipment required for playing Badminton. Now, you can get ideas about the types of equipment each. The leading equipment for the game is racquets. Badminton racquets should be lightweight. Racquets are mainly made of carbon fibre composite (graphite-reinforced plastic). Before carbon fibre composite, racquets were made of light metals such as aluminum, and before still, racquets were made of wood.
Even nowadays we can find cheap racquets made of still in the market. But wooden racquets are out of demand because of its excessive production cost. String in the racquet plays a vital role in the game. Strings are usually thin, but thicker strings are more durable. String tension creates an impact on the control and power of the racquet.
The grip is an essential part of the racquet. We hold the racquet by the grip. So it’s crucial to find a suitable grip for your own hands. The player should change grip regularly. The length of a racket should not exceed a maximum of 6 cm, and the width should not exceed 23 cm.
Shuttlecocks are mainly two types, those made of authentic feathers and those made of nylon. Nylon versions are cheaper, and they last longer than the feather ones. Those shuttlecocks made of feathers are expensive and often thought to be better than the shuttlecocks made from nylon. But in reality, nylon shuttlecocks are better in all aspects. The weight of the shuttle will not be less than 4.64 grams or more than 5.50 grams.
Another essential part is the net. Net is just used as the divider of the ground. Any kind of nets can be used to play Badminton.
Shoes are a vital element for this game. In Badminton, the player has to move at a sound pace. Without ensuring the right footwear, one simply can’t avoid risk-free playing. There are specialized badminton shoes available in the market. Badminton shoes are lightweight; the soles are thin. It helps the player to keep his feets close to the ground and also provides lateral support. The player can move ankle and foot quickly with the perfect shoes.
Rules of the game
There are two types of games. Singles and doubles. A total of 2 players from both sides participate in the singles match. A total of 4 players from both parties participate in the doubles competition. In both singles and doubles, the game is usually 15 to 21 points. If both the players or teams score 20-20 points, they have to win by a margin of 2 points, like 22-20, 25-23, etc. Deuce is when the positions of both teams are equal. We should remember that the game must end in a maximum of 30 points. Whichever team wins two of the three games will be the winner.
Players will serve from the court on their right. If there are zero or even numbers of points during the single-game. And from the court on the left if there is an odd number. Players will change their service or receiving court after each point.
The player on the right will serve on the opponent’s court for the first time during the double game. Only the player who will be served will receive the service. No player can serve twice in a row. The winning player in the first game will start the service in the second game.
The two legs of the server will be touching the ground during the service. Even if the shuttle hits the net while performing the service, the service will be considered correct if it falls on the court. If you touch the shuttle spot, it will be regarded as clean.
No one can hit the shuttle by crossing the net, and no one can touch the net and post with the racket or any part of the body during the game.
Court Dimensions
The badminton court is rectangular. It is divided by a net in two halves. The size of the court is 44 feet (13.4 meters) in both singles and doubles. Width sizes vary in single and double —17 feet (5.18 meters) in single and 20 feet (6.1 meters) in double. The height of the net should be 5 feet (1.55 meters) above the ground.
The net is 2.5 feet wide and 20 feet long. Two more spots should be drawn 15 feet away from the two heads of the court’s length along the width. The net will be along the middle of the 14 feet space. And the place that is 6 feet on both sides of the net is the short service line.
At a distance of 2 feet 6 inches from the two ends of the court, one more mark should be drawn along the width. Whose name is Long Service Line? The centerline is in the middle of the court along the width, up to the short service line. You can’t find the minimum height for the ceiling above the court in the Laws of Badminton. But it mustn’t touch the limits.
