Spinner Taijul Islam has become first Bangladeshi to play in South African T20 league. He was signed by Durban Super Giants for 500,000 South African rand (approximately 3.5 million taka in Bangladeshi taka). The team’s official page welcomed Taijul on social media, writing, “He won the heart of Durban with spin.”
Durban had a disappointing performance last season. They were eliminated from the league stage after winning just two of their 10 matches. This season, the team is looking for hope in the spin department around Taijul. Taijul is an integral part of Bangladesh’s Test team. He has not had much opportunity in T20Is. He has played only two T20Is for Bangladesh. The 33-year-old left-arm spinner has played 105 matches in the recognized T20Is so far, taking 88 wickets. Average 26.29 and economy 7.42. However, this is the first time he is going to play in a foreign franchise league
Apart from Shakib Al Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, Liton Das and Taijul, the remaining 10 Bangladeshi cricketers in this SA Twenty20 auction are Tanjim Hasan, Tanjid Hasan, Mehedi Hasan, Mehedi Hasan Miraj, Shamim Hossain, Towhid Hridoy, Hasan Mahmud, Zaker Ali, Shariful Islam and Nahid Rana. However, only Taijul got the team. Mustafizur Rahman was put up for auction but remained unsold.
Even if he gets a chance in SA Twenty20, Taijul is apprehensive about playing there because the next season’s SA Twenty20 will start in December. The BPL also takes place at the same time. The fourth edition of the SA Twenty20, organized by the Cricket South Africa Board (CSA), will begin on January 23 and continue until February 24. A total of six teams will participate in the tournament.
